Archives For Star Trek

When I think about soapbox derbies, I usually think of it as a kids activity.  Not because we ever had any soapbox derbies where I grew up because we didn’t, but because growing up, I always saw kids driving them on tv and in the movies.  However, apparently they aren’t just for kids anymore and they no longer look like they cost $2 and a tetanus shot to create.

Thanks to some warp engines, Rob Wixey is sure to beat all the competition in any soapbox race with his spectacular Star Trek Enterprise soapbox car.  Apparently he built this amazing Enterprise soapbox car to compete in the Red Bull Soapbox Race on July 14th in London so if you are in the area, I suggest going so you can check this out in person!

I wish I could be at the race just to see the look of fear this instills in the other competitors.  I know I would never stand a chance in a race against the Enterprise!  I bet Rob could beat anybody with just his impulse engines.

As one might expect, I tend to meet a lot of geeks but I don’t think I have ever met one that doesn’t have a preference between Star Trek or Star Wars.  I think most geeks enjoy both but they usually have a preference for one or the other.  Personally, I am a Star Trek guy although I still enjoy Star Wars too but I don’t watch it nearly as much as I watch Star Trek.

Well, speaking of people who like both Star Trek and Star Wars, I think I have found a t-shirt that combines the two that you are really going to love.

The awesome folks over at TShirtBordello have this awesome May The Force Be With You shirt on sale right now for just $10.  The shirt normally runs $15 and I am not sure how long this sale will last so if you love both Star Trek and Star Wars, order it now before the price goes back up!  Nothing says I wish you well to both Star Trek and Star Wars fans than a shirt with a Vulcan solute that says may the force be with you.

Its not very often you see mash-ups between Star Trek and Star Wars despite the number of fans that love both.  I’m not quite sure why that is because I often see people combine one of those franchises with something else like Doctor Who or even Space Invaders but I have a feeling it has to do with the Star Wars vs Star Trek mentality.  I know a lot of geeks like to have that debate but I tend to be one of those can’t we all just get along kind of people.  I think if there was less fighting and more baking, we would have more awesome Star Trek and Star Wars mash-up cookies like the ones below!

Star Trek and Star Wars fan Klickitat Street is the creator of these delicious looking cookies that combine Star Wars with the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series.  No matter which franchise you prefer (I’m a Star Trek person myself although I enjoy both depending on my mood), you can’t deny how cute and utterly awesome these cookies are!

Like many people, I enjoy pretty much all styles of music to some extent.  While my favorite is symphonic metal, I also love classic rock, country, pop among others.  Included in my list of musical love is any music performed in Klingon.

Last year I posted an awesome video of comedian Rachel Bloom singing “Seasons of Love” from Rent in Klingon and to this day, it is still one of my all time favorite videos that I have posted on Global Geek News.  Well, now I have some more great Klingon music to share!

The obviously geeky folks behind The Improvised Star Trek comedy podcast created this amazing spoof video of Sixpence None the Richer’s hit Kiss Me in Klingon.  The song is called HIchop! (Klingon for ‘Bite me’) by Sixpence None the Honor.

I really hope we see more Klingon music videos like this in the future because stuff like this makes my day.  Next, I want to see the Klingon version of Hanson’s MMMbop.  What would you like to see performed in Klingon?  Let us know in the comments below!

For some reason, there doesn’t seem to be too many people that makes stuff with beads anymore.  I remember when I was a kid, it was quite easy to go into pretty much any mom and pop shop and find something made out of beads whether it was a necklace or a holder for your tv remotes.  Well, even though it seems to have largely become a lost art, occasion I still find some cool bead art.  In the past I found some spectacular Sonic the Hedgehog bead art but now I have found some amazing Star Trek bead art!

Reddit user djkimothy made this awesome piece of Star Trek Captain Picard bead art for a friends birthday.

I’m not sure how many beads were used or how long it took to make but judging by the quality and level of detail, I would say a lot of time and effort went into this.  It was definitely worth it too because it turned out looking great!

Anybody who has been reading Global Geek News for a while knows I am a HUGE Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fan.  It is easily my all time favorite show and rarely does a night go by that I don’t watch at least one episode before falling asleep.  However, until today, I have never seen any kind of DS9 themed cake.  For all of the other Star Trek cakes I post such as the mind blowing Borg wedding cake or the Star Trek Voyager cake, I have never had the opportunity to post a Deep Space Nine inspired cake until now.

This awesome Star Trek: Deep Space Nine inspired U.S.S. Defiant cake was made by the obviously cook cake makers at Stuffed Cakes.  The Defiant is my favorite Starfleet ship and I think they did a pretty good job at capturing the essence of the vessel.  However, I find it very unfortunate that the cake wasn’t made for me because I have yet to meet a bigger DS9 fan than me.

Thanks to all of the holiday weight I put on a couple of months ago (I think everybody just made more cookies and stuff than usual this year), I have decided to cut out the sweets and any unnecessary calories until I am no longer in danger of having to buy all new pants that are bigger than my current ones.  However, while I may be avoiding the consumption of sweets, I still love looking at them, especially when they are geeky!

Speaking of geeky cupcakes, Cake Central member Yokko made this amazing Spock cupcake!  I’m not sure how I feel about the black look of the cupcake itself but the handmade Spock cupcake topper is amazing!  I’d say it turned out really well!

Remember, if you hope to live long and prosper, avoid the sweets!

Star Trek Nail Tattoos [pic]

Jeremy Bray —  February 20, 2013 — 1 Comment

Until today, I have never heard of fingernail tattoos before.  I have heard of fake fingernails and I have posted a ton of amazing fingernail art paint jobs that people have done both on here and my other blog, Fanboy Fashion, but I have never come across the term nail tattoos before today.  While I may not be that familiar with them, if the Star Trek nail tattoos below are any indication, they are an awesome idea!

Etsy seller originails is selling these awesome Star Trek fingernail tattoos for $4.76. You get a sheet of these things so it seems like a pretty good price, especially if you love Spock, the Vulcan solute or the Klingons.

In case you aren’t familiar with fingernail tattoos, from what I can tell of the instructions for putting them on, they are kind of like a decal that you can put on top of your painted nails.

One of my favorite things about going to sci-fi conventions is to see the women dressed in Vulcan cosplay.  I know that sounds a little odd considering all of the great things that can be seen and done at sci-fi cons but for some reason, I find the pointy ear thing extremely attractive.  What can I say?  Some guys like odd body parts like feet (eww!) and I like pointy ears.  Anyway…

This super sexy femme Spock cosplay is being modeled by the beautiful Dezi Desire.  I don’t know if she is as good of an actress as Leonard Nemoy but I would say she looks better in heels.  I’d also rather see her stomach and legs over Nemoy’s any day, especially with as old and wrinkly as he is now.  Enjoy that mental image!

One of the more common dating profile questions I have seen on sites like OKCupid is the question “What is the first thing people notice about you?”  I suppose my answer to such a question would have to be that I wear my geeky side on my sleeve.  Literally.  I never leave the house without some sort of geeky hat (God of War is the hat I am sporting these days) and a geeky shirt.  In the case of today, I am waring a Doctor Who t-shirt that looks like a traditional Christmas sweater.  Anyway, If you want to be the one who answers that question by saying people notice you look like a Klingon, now you can!

Etsy seller EwoksInTutus is selling this awesome Star Trek Worf hoodie sweatshirt for just $95.  Nothing says I am a Star Trek fan more than going around in public looking like the lovable Klingon, Worf!

They are made to order in sizes S-XL but they take 2-3 weeks to make so if you decide to order one of these awesome Worf hoodies, keep that in mind.
