All CES 2010 plans have been canceled

As many of you know, I have been planning for several months to attend the 2010 CES and had a number of things planned for the show including shows from CES and much more.  Unfortunately, that won't be happening.

There are two major reasons for the canceling this years CES plans.  First, if the PR spam I have been getting is any indication, this is going to be a very boring CES.  It seems that most things will just be either new iterations of past products or companies I have never heard of ripping off other products.  I have even received PR crap advertising things like the first ever mind controlled game which I know is a complete load of crap as I have seen these kinds of things before.  On the off chance that there is something notable coming out of this year's CES, I figure I might as well save my money and just cover the coverage if there is anything worth talking about.  Also, any company that calls me to talk me into stopping by their booth in hopes that I will give them some press automatically go on my crap list.  If you want to contact me, do it via e-mail like everybody else.  DO NOT CALL ME UNLESS I ASK YOU TO!

The other and biggest reason is all of the new TSA travel BS.  I am not being sponsored or anything to cover CES and I will not fork out a bunch of money out of my pocket and miss several days of work just to be treated like some slave.  The TSA's rules were ridiculous before Christmas and they are now so bad that I have canceled all my flights that I have had planned for any traveling.  As much as I hate driving for long periods of time, I would much rather do that than mess with the theater we call "security" at airports.  I would drive to CES, but going over the mountain passes this time of year is not advised and in good conditions, that is still like a 14 hour drive.  Until we either get rid of the TSA (which is really what we should do) or the TSA decides to pull its head out of its butt and get rid of some of their stupid rules, I have no plans to be flying anywhere.

Anyway, those are my primary reasons for not going to CES this year.  There are a few other smaller reasons but those are the main reasons.  If there is anything worth talking about that comes out of CES, I will talk about it from what I hear from people at the show, but otherwise I won't be doing too much CES related stuff.

I am now a Microsoft Student Insider, changes are coming

Greetings Readers!

I have some absolutely amazing news to share with all of you.  As of today, I am officially a Microsoft Student Insider.  What is that you ask?  Essentially, it is an unpaid job to blog about various topics that they would like me to blog about.  There is one student insider to talk about a specific topic.  In my case, I am the chosen one to speak about all things Windows 7.  Normally, I wouldn't take an unpaid position, but the perks of the job are good enough that I don't mind it.

While I will be writing a minimum of 15 blog posts for Microsoft over the next year, I am also being sent, all expenses paid, to whatever conferences they want to send me to cover.  While I don't yet know a schedule of everywhere I am going to be sent, I do know that I am being sent to cover PDC in LA all of next week.  It seems a bit fast considering I just got the job today, but I don't think I can complain too much about a free trip to LA and entrance into an expensive conference and I am getting some awesome stuff too.  As part of being a Student Insider, to help me cover the event and others like it, I am being given a Flip HD camcorder, an ASUS eee pc netbook, a Microsoft shirt and some various other things to help with cab fair and such.  I am also told that I will have access to talk to higher up people within Microsoft like various product managers and stuff, possibly even some board members either next week or at other times.

I will tell the story of how I got the position in either another post or on the next episode of the podcast which is at a time to be determined since I will be en route to LA at our normal recording time, but I do want to address what this means for the blog.

Although I have wanted a sponsor for some time for the show or the blog or whatever, mainly to help pay for my hosting fees, domain fees and such, at the same time, I have always dreaded the idea.  I have build the podcast and this blog on a goal of being 100% honest, 100% of the time with no BS.  I have always dreaded the idea of the sponsor because I don't like the feeling that I can't say what I want to say about a topic because I don't want to worry about offending them.  The last thing I want to do is open up my mouth and scare way people who want to throw money at me.  When I found out more about this position, I hesitated for a bit because of this, but I have decided that despite what I am being given or where I am being sent, I will do everything I can not to allow it to influence my opinions so that I appear to be nothing but a mouthpiece for a company.  I will gladly blog about the topics that they request I blog about, but in the end, I will express how I really feel.  I will do my absolute best not to censor myself.  I will allow Microsoft or anybody else to present their case to me and I will forward it on to my audience, but in the end, my opinion is my own.

If all goes the way I hope, the type of content on here and the podcast will not change, there will just be more Windows 7 related stuff and when it is something that Microsoft wants me to talk about, I will make that very clear so that you can factor that into your judgment of my writing when you read my posts.

I primarily see this as an opening door that I have been trying to work my way into for the past 2 years.  As many know, I have been trying to get a job at Microsoft for nearly 2 years and I see this as my way in and I will do whatever I can to achieve my dream while keeping my integrity in regards to Global Geek News but I suppose we will see how it plays out.  Anyway, there may or may not be a podcast next week.  Since I will likely be in flight when the show is recorded, it will definitely not be released on Tuesday like normal.  There is a small chance of recording on Wednesday but at this point, I am not holding my breath.  It is most likely the case that we will end up skipping a weeks show but I don't yet know.  I will keep you all informed.

More to come!

Why ‘Live Twittering’ is a Horrible Idea

Greetings Readers!

I have another rant again today.  Hopefully I will have some more upbeat things to write about after this but today's topic really irritated me this morning so after gathering my thoughts, I decided that I should address the idea of "live twittering" here.

'Live Twittering' is likely a new term to most people as thankfully it hasn't really caught on at this point.  Live Twittering is much like live blogging except it takes place on Twitter.  It can also take place on other micro-blogging services but since Twitter is the biggest, I will be talking about it today.  Live blogging and live Twittering are similar in that they are a live reporting of something as it happens.  Whether its a tv show or a press event, it is relaying information in near real time primarily for those who cant experience the event themselves or wish to share the experience with others.

Although similar, there is one major difference that I see to be a major problem.  Live blogging is attended by people who specifically seek to be apart of the live blog whereas with live Twittering, followers don't really have a choice without completely unfollowing the person.  Often times, live blogs contain material that people consider to be spoilers but that is something that is acknowledged and accepted by those who intentionally go and read or participate in the live blog.  This presents a major issue for live Twittering.  When live Twittering something such as a TV show (for example, the Battlestar Galactica finale), the live tweeter's followers will be inundated with information they either don't care about or don't want to know because they are unable to watch at that time and don't want to have the episode spoiled for them before they get a chance to watch.  Live twittering essentially takes away that choice for the user and leaves them with the only real option of unfollowing you either permanently or temporarily until they know you have stopped.

Its clear that the major difference is user choice.  The user can choose whether or not to be apart of their live blog, but the choice becomes much more difficult when you force the experience on them by live Twittering.   I have even had people threaten to unfollow me if I took that choice away from them, which is why I only do a live blog.  It all comes down to choice, something that should never be taken away from your potential audience.

New Twitter Etiquette (part 2) Rule:  Thou shalt not live Twitter!

If you want to see how I handle this issue, you are invited to watch and participate in my Battlestar Galactica live blog tonight on Pcnerd37.com.  I will be Twittering out the exact link when I go live (So follow me!).  The show starts at 10pm EST but I typically get things going around 9:30pm EST.

Programming Note:  I put up two Global Geek News Podcasts this week so check them out.  Wesley is busy with SXSW so I will likely do a solo show over the weekend and put it up as soon as its ready.

10 Things to do When Twitter is Down

Greetings Readers!

Given the recent Twitter problems of the last week, similar to the months ago when Twitter was down almost as much as it was up, I decided I should compile a list of things that people can do while Twitter is down or showing the Fail Whale.

1.  Use other services similar to Twitter.

There are many other services that perform a similar function to Twitter that can hold you over until Twitter returns.  Many people like services such as Plurk or Pownce.  While I never cared for Plurk, I do like Pownce although rarely use it because I don't have that many friends on the network.  Personally, I mainly use FriendFeed (me).  Friendfeed is great for not only communicating in a manner similar to Twitter (it does unfortunately lack direct messaging functionality) but it is a great place for people to announce their latest online content creation.  Friendfeed is able to detect new blog posts, favorited YouTube videos, new Flickr photos and much more and then put them in your stream to share with others and get feedback on your online activities.

2.  Blog

There are millions of people who have a blog and chances are, you do as well.  Try filling the Twitter void by doing some blogging.  Whether you want to talk about how bad the drivers in your area are, or just want to share some of your favorite recipes with the Internet, blogging is a great way of expressing yourself and inviting others into your life and thoughts.  If you don't already have a blog, you can start one for free with sites like Wordress and Blogger.

3.  Read blogs!

Like I mentioned, there are millions of blogs on the Internet.  There are likely to be a ton of blogs on the subjects you care about.  Google your interests to find related blogs and join in on the discussion!  Whether you are looking to learn something or help others learn by commenting on posts, blogs are one of the most valuable things on the Internet.  Don't forget to comment on the blogs that you read!  Bloggers thrive on user feedback and you can often contribute to the discussion by bringing your own perspective to the issue (For more information on being a constructive commenter, read this blog post).

4.  Start an online discussion!

There are many places on the Internet that are great for having an online discussion such as chat rooms and message boards.  Much like with blogs, there are countless chat rooms and message boards that are dedicated to a large number of topics.  If you are having trouble finding a blog post that you want to bring you insight to, try starting a thread on a message board or find a chat room dedicated to the topic you want to discuss.  Although these communication mediums have been around almost as long as the Internet, they are still a great way to communicate with people you don't know about subjects that you are interested in.

5.  Create a video!

With services such as YouTube, almost anybody can create a video and put it online at no cost.  The only thing you really need to put a video online is a camera or webcam.  One of the great things about user generated content is that there are very few restrictions you have to abide by when creating things like online video.  Whether you want to create video of your kids to show the rest of the family, or make a funny video you hope will be the next 'Leave Britney Alone' video, when it comes to making online video, or really any online content, you are limited only by your imagination.  If you really want to have fun, try creating a video podcast!

6.  Create an audio podcast!

Speaking of podcasts, probably the most popular podcast medium is audio.  Creating an audio podcast is easy, all you need is a microphone and some audio recording software such as Audacity.  You can create a podcast on just about any topic.  Personally, I have two technology related podcasts, the Global Geek News Podcast and the Geek News Daily Podcast.  Whether you want to talk about technology, politics, food or anything else, an audio podcast is a great way to have a conversation with other people that know about the same topic as you and then share it with the rest of the world.  Of course you can go solo on your podcast, but how you run your podcast is completely up to you!

7.  Check out new podcasts!

If you are like me, you often fall behind on podcasts and need to catch up.  When Twitter is down, it is not only a great time to catch up, but a great time to check out new podcasts you have never heard or watched!  Whether you are using the Zune software or iTunes, they are some of the quickest ways to find new podcasts on topics that interest you!  If you don't use software like that, don't fear as most podcasts can be found on PodcastAlley.com.  Some podcasts aren't as good as others, but there are some great shows out there that will entertain and educate almost anybody.  If you are looking for some of my personal recommendations, ask in the comments and I will throw some great shows out there.

8.  Watch online video

There is millions of hours of video online, so you can easily watch some online video and never run out.  This often depends on where you are in the world as to what content you can get to thanks to licensing, but you can find tons of videos online on sites like Hulu.com or TheWB.com.  With these sites and many others, you can easily watch many of your favorite television shows and movies for free!  If you are looking for less professional content, there are of course sites such as YouTube, but even they are getting on the professional content bandwagon and starting to show TV shows for free!  Also, don't forget to check out the new and improved Joost!

9.  Shop Online!

It is almost the Holiday Season, its time to stop putting off that holiday shopping!  With great shopping sites such as Amazon.com and Buy.com, its easy to find the gifts that your loved ones want.  Of course its always a good idea to buy something for yourself when you get something for your friends and family!  Why hassle with the crowds at the major retail stores when you can get the same products online for cheaper and not have to pay sales tax (this depends on where you live)?  I have saved thousands of dollars by shopping online and you can too!  With the current state of the economy, saving every penny you can is not necessarily a bad idea.  Warning:  Beware of scammers!  With online shopping increasing during the holiday season, its a good idea to keep an eye out for people trying to rip you off or steal you identity.

10.  Play games online!

There are tons of great games to play online to pass the time.  Whether you want to play some simple flash games on websites such as AddictingGames.com or some great games on Xbox Live, there is a vast number of games that you can play online.  Depending on the kind of games you like and whether you want to play with others, you can choose from thousands of games to online.  Not everybody can afford the monthly fee of games such as World of Warcraft, but there are many free games that are great for passing the time!  Do a search on free games and you will likely find more games than you could ever have time to play.

These are just a few of the many things that you can while Twitter is down without having to leave your computer.  If you have any suggestions for this list, put them in the comments to share them with everybody!

Blogging is good for you!

Greetings Globlal Geek News fans!

Sorry I haven't posted a blog in a while, but they will now start appearing on a regular basis, likely daily. Anyway, on to todays topic, blogging!

I came across a story on Scientific American's website about how blogging is good for you and decided I should give my thoughts on the article. This story is also talked about in the lastest Global Geek News podcast with my co-host Larry and special guest Alana Taylor.

I have been blogging on various topics for a number of years and I must admit, this story came as no real surprise to me. Basically, the article states the various physiological benefits of blogging that seem to be common among most kinds of expressive writing. These benefits include improved memory and sleep, boosts immune cell activity and reduces viral load in AIDS patients, and even speeds healing after surgery. A study in the February issue of the Oncologist reports that cancer patients who engaged in expressive writing just before treatment felt markedly better, mentally and physically, as compared with patients who did not. I honestly don't find this the least bit suprising.

While I find that not everybody shares my opinion, I usually find blogging to be very therapeutic. There are many times when I find a particular topic or situation on my mind that it helps me express my thoughts and relieve stress by blogging. I find that expressing my thoughts on a blog or service like Twitter is a good way of venting or getting feedback about various situations.

Like most all people, I find it far easier to sleep at night if my mind is not racing about something that happened that day. If I type out my thoughts as they occur to me, I find that it becomes easier to fall asleep and stay asleep at night without as many bizarre dreams (assuming I don't eat an entire pizza right before going to bed).

I do find it interesting that this has become an area of study and a form of therapy by many hospitals and doctors. The end of the article states that many hospitals have started hosting patient blogs as a form of patient therapy and to allow them to connect with other people who have been through similar experiences.

I believe that the community created by blogs can have a great affect on the blogger and readers alike. The ability to have a medium to interact with others that can relate to the same experience you are having is an amazing value to everybody involved. It is a great thing to know that you are not alone when you have to go through situations such as cancer treatment. By bringing other people into your life through a blog, this is also a way to share ideas with other people as well as open yourself up to a new world of possibilities.

So if you don't a blog, I recommend you start at least one as you could find great benefits in your life.
